Back to School - Top 5 Safety Tips

CornerHouse works every day to keep children safe and happy. As school is back in session, we want parents and caregivers to have tools to discuss safety with children in their lives. We don't want children to be scared. We want to equip families to have conversations that continue throughout childhood.

Here are 5 safety tips for children ages 5 to 8

  1. Create a FAMILY SAFETY WORD: this is a word that the family will use if another person needs to pick up the child from school/day care. This is also a safety measure if someone is asking the children for information about where they live, go to school etc...We only go with or share information with a safe adult who knows the Family Safety Word.

  2. INFORMATION is Power: Make sure your child has their parent’s or caregiver's cell phone numbers, home address, and full name of their parent/caregiver(s).

  3. PRACTICE walking home from the bus stop, the park or school. Identify neighbors on the way where the child can go if needed.

  4. LISTEN to your inner voice: Teach children about their natural "alarm system" that alerts them that something may need their attention.

  5. Create a SAFETY TEAM: these are safe adults in the lives of your children they can turn to if they or someone needs information or help.
